American Legion Awards (contact: MS counselor)
During the month of May, eighth grade students nominate fellow team classmates that demonstrate a high level of the following: service to community, academics, leadership/citizenship, responsibilities that they have and school related activities. Each team votes from their nominated list to determine the 6 finalists. These finalists then write a paragraph about how each of the criteria relates to them. That work is given to the counselor who numbers it to remove the identity of the student. A group of MS staff then scores the papers. One male and one female candidate with the highest score are selected. These winners are awarded a special medal by the Saline American Legion Post.
Midwest Academic Talent Search (contact: MS Counselor)
Sponsored by Northwestern University. This program is open to all students who have scored in the 95th percentile or above on standardized tests. Parents complete nomination forms that allow the students to take the SAT or ACT along with high school students on specific dates. Test scores allow students to participate in many summer programs for high achieving students as well as providing planning and other information important for highly able students. Use the School ID code #8200691 for Saline Middle School when registering.
